Feeling Depressed? 4 Self-Care Tips To Help You Feel Better Right Now

Depression is one of those things that that can creep up on you coming from what seems like nowhere. One day you’re fine and the next, you’re in shambles.

It can make you sink into this feeling where it seems like no matter what you do, you just can’t seem to get your shit together. You feel worthless and worst of all, depression can make you feel like you’ll never be happy again.

For times like this, it’s good to have a go-to list of things you can do to perk you up, even if it’s for a little while. I put together a short list of tips that have helped me get through my depression in the past.

Not everyone’s depression is the same and I can only provide you with the remedies that have worked for me. My hope is that some of these tips, maybe even one, can help you too!

Play Some Music

I know how hard it can be to simply get up out of bed, but studies show that music can alter your mood, it can change the rhythm of your heartbeat so that it sort of syncs with the beat of the music, for instance, if you listen to really upbeat music your heart might beat faster, same goes for a relaxing or calmer melody. Listening to music also releases specific chemicals in our brains, such as serotonin and dopamine, making us feel happy with upbeat music and encouraging other feelings with relaxing and/or calm music.

Take A Relaxing Bath Or Shower

This one might take a bit more effort, but you will be so thankful that you did. There have been times when I was so depressed that I could not get out of bed, least of all take a shower. However, there comes a point when you have to choose, you either lay in the bed, essentially in your own filth or you can get up and simply stand in the shower. When your depression is telling you to stay down, tell it, it’s only a quick shower. Trust me, you will feel so much better and if you don’t, at least you will be clean.

Light A Candle Or Spray Your Favorite Fragrance

I personally love a good fragrance, Jo Malone has some of my favorite scents, they are so subtle but very direct. When I need to lift my spirits I’ll spray a few pumps of perfume around and it automatically makes the space lighter and more cheery. Candles are also a great way to perk up your environment. It provides warm and calming light and also produces a wonderful smell for you to enjoy for hours.

Open Your Windows

There is nothing better than fresh air and being stuck in a stuffy room for a few days can keep you down in the dumps. A quick and easy fix is simply opening up your windows and letting some sunshine and fresh air through!
